7 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

Home Safety · May 28, 2026

Your electrical panel quietly does one of the most important jobs in your home: distributing power safely to every circuit. When it starts to struggle, the warning signs are easy to miss - until they become a hazard. Here are seven signs it's time to call an electrician about an upgrade.

1. Breakers trip frequently

An occasional trip is normal. But if a breaker trips again and again, your panel is telling you a circuit is overloaded or faulty. Repeated tripping is the most common reason homeowners call us for a panel evaluation.

2. You still have a fuse box

Fuse boxes were standard decades ago but can't keep up with modern electrical demand. If you're replacing fuses or have a 60- or 100-amp service, an upgrade to a 200-amp breaker panel is usually overdue.

3. The panel is warm, buzzing, or smells hot

A panel should be silent and cool. Warmth, buzzing, crackling, or a burning smell points to loose connections or overheating - a genuine fire risk. Stop using the affected circuits and call an electrician right away.

4. Lights flicker or dim across the house

Whole-house flickering, especially when large appliances kick on, often signals an overloaded or failing panel or service - not just a bad bulb.

5. No room to add circuits

Adding a generator, hot tub, or addition? If your panel is full, you'll need more capacity. We size upgrades with room to grow.

6. You have a recalled panel brand

Federal Pacific (FPE) and Zinsco panels have a documented history of failing to trip properly. If you have one, replacement is strongly recommended regardless of other symptoms.

7. Your home is 25+ years old and never upgraded

Electrical demand has climbed dramatically. An older panel that's never been touched may simply be undersized and aging out.
